A foster parent and child

The Application Process

Becoming a foster parent can feel daunting. It helps to see it as a small series of steps that get you qualified, prepared, and supported. Here's what to expect.

Throughout the process, two things matter most: that you're prepared for the children coming into care, and that your home is a safe place for them. The background checks exist to do exactly that, screening out anyone with a history of child-protection concerns.

  1. 1

    Interview and home visit

It starts with a phone conversation, then a visit to your home. Ask us anything; there’s no commitment, and it’s a chance for both of us to see if fostering is the right fit.

  2. 2

    Application documents

You’ll complete the application paperwork and the background checks that keep children safe: a Vulnerable Sector police check, a child-welfare check, and references.

  3. 3

    Home study (SAFE)

A series of interviews, called a Structured Analysis Family Evaluation, that builds an honest picture of your family’s strengths and helps us match children well.

  4. 4

    Training

Trauma-informed preparation, including PRIDE training, so you feel ready and confident. Once it’s complete, your home is ready to welcome a child.

With prompt paperwork and a flexible schedule, the whole process can take as little as two months; our goal is no more than three. Not sure if now's the right time? The Foster Home Quiz is a quick, private self-check.
